From our 1996 roots in Walkers Court, Soho, to our new private sanctuary in Covent Garden, we provide a relaxed, professional home for high-quality art. Led by Darryl Gates, our studio honors the legendary traditions of our predecessors while evolving with world-class craftsmanship. Whether it’s your first tattoo or you’re a seasoned veteran, our expert team ensures an experience that stays with you forever.
Darryl Gates was born in London in 1969, growing up obsessed with American comic books and the electric energy of rock ’n’ roll. A musician by nature, Darryl performed in iconic London venues like the Marquee Club before his path led him to the legendary Diamond Jacks. After apprenticing under Ian Kaye, Darryl took the reins in 2003. Today, he is a master of lowbrow Americana and traditional Japanese styles. His career spans decades of work with global celebrities, film, and fashion brands, bringing the true heart of London’s rock ’n’ roll culture to every piece of ink he creates.
Our Journey: From Soho to Covent Garden
The Beginning (1996): Diamond Jacks was established in the legendary Walkers Court, Soho, by Ian Kaye.
The Darryl Gates Era (2003): After apprenticing under Ian Kaye, Darryl Gates took over the studio, bringing his passion for lowbrow Americana and Traditional Japanese styles to the forefront.
The Anniversary (2026): We are now celebrating our 30th Anniversary by moving to our new private sanctuary in historic Covent Garden.
